Jesuit education, both its theory and practice are rooted in the life and spiritual vision of
Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus. And to begin to understand the mind
and heart of Ignatius, we must turn to two basic sources: The Autobiography of St.
Ignatius and The Spiritual Exercises. The Autobiography records, as does, for example
Wordsworth's Prelude, the growth of a man's soul, the life experiences which produced
Ignatius' conversion and his particular spiritual vision. And it is in The Spiritual
Exercises that this spiritual vision is distilled.
Two fundamental concepts of Ignatian spirituality, at least or me, are found in these two words: immanence and instrumentality.
