Descripción

Each day, in every class, at every level dialogue is taking place. It is in the school that we are introduced to dialogue its process and its content . It is the school where w e first encounter its possibilities and its challenges. The centrality of dialogu e in the school is recognised in The Identity of the Catholic School for a Culture of Dialogue (Jan. 2022), issued by the then Congregation for Education . Although it recognised that formal and informal education today takes place in multicultural and multireligious environments , the Instruction is also concerned that there should be no erosion of catholic identity. In order to open up this reflection, I will first briefly outline the Church’s understanding of the centrality of dialogue, especially its four circles , and what this means for faith. I will then do the same for the Society’s understanding of dialogue as an expression indeed a necessary part of faith, and how this is rooted in Vatican II. Finally , I will attempt to demonstrate how these two sources can be employed in open ing up the dialogical nature of the four Universal Apostolic Preferences of the Society and how they might shape our educational mission.
